  19. WHAT IS WINPRINT?
  20.  
  21.      WinPrint is a Windows shareware application that allows
  22.      you to easily print ASCII text files from within
  23.      Windows.  It allows you to specify headers and footers
  24.      with page numbers, fonts, margins, landscape v.
  25.      portrait mode, and "multiple pages up" printing.  See
  26.      the WINPRINT.HLP file for a more complete description.
  27.      
  28.      WinPrint was designed from the very beginning to be a
  29.      tool for printing plain text files.  Version 1.3 and
  30.      Version 1.4 do not support the printing of graphics,
  31.      word processing documents, or spreadsheets.  The goal
  32.      from has been to keep WinPrint as small, efficient, and
  33.      simple as possible.
  34.      
  35.      If you want to print graphics use PaintBrush it works
  36.      just fine.  If you want to print your word processing
  37.      documents, use your word processor, and if you want to
  38.      print spreadsheets use your spreadsheet package; they
  39.      all print nicely.  But if you want to print plain ASCII
  40.      text files use WinPrint!
  41.  
  42.      The WINPRINT.HLP file contains all the documentation
  43.      you will need.  It also contains information on how to
  44.      register WinPrint.
  45.      
  46. GETTING STARTED
  47.      
  48.      A few quick notes on what is needed to run WinPrint:
  49.      
  50.      Under Windows 3.0 and 3.0a you need the following
  51.      Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) in your path:
  52.           
  53.           TDUTIL.DLL     - WinPrint Support DLL
  54.           COMMDLG.DLL    - Microsoft Common Dialogs DLL.
  55.                     You only need this file if you are
  56.                     running on Windows 3.0.
  57.      
  58.      You will also need the main WINPRINT.EXE executable
  59.      file and the help file (WINPRINT.HLP).
  60.      
  61.      I recommend that you create a "WINAPPS" directory off
  62.      of your root directory in which you place all of your
  63.      "small" Windows applications such as WinPrint.  Copy
  64.      the above files into this directory and make sure that
  65.      the directory is in your path statement.
  66.      
  67.      You can now run WinPrint just as you would any Windows
  68.      application.  See the section in the WINPRINT.HLP file
  69.      titled STARTING WINPRINT for more details.
  70.      
  71. NOTES TO USERS OF WINPRINT 1.3
  72.  
  73.      WinPrint 1.32 was designed Windows 2.x application.  It
  74.      worked correctly under Windows 3.0 because it adhered
  75.      to Microsoft's programming guidelines for Windows.
  76.      
  77.      WinPrint 1.4 has been designed as a Windows 3.x
  78.      application.  It takes advantage of features found only
  79.      in Windows 3.0 and above.  As such, it will not run on
  80.      Windows 2.x, and will not operate correctly with
  81.      printer drivers that have not been updated to the
  82.      Windows 3.0 specification.
  83.      
  84.      Versions of Windows previous to Windows 3.0 provided no
  85.      way for applications to store printer settings
  86.      "locally."  For example any change made to printer
  87.      settings from within an application (such as landscape
  88.      mode) were made system wide.  The Windows 3.0 printer
  89.      driver specification allows for applications to change
  90.      printer settings locally.  WinPrint 1.4 takes advantage
  91.      of this, and adheres to the policy that no application
  92.      except Control Panel can make system wide printer
  93.      setting changes.
  94.      
  95.      One of the biggest bugs in WinPrint 1.32 was that it
  96.      incorrectly selected fonts.  For example you would tell
  97.      it to print using a 10 point font, but it would
  98.      actually use a font much smaller.  This has been
  99.      corrected in WinPrint 1.4.
  100.      
  101.      Because of the changes to WinPrint 1.4 are fundamental
  102.      in nature, saved configurations from earlier versions
  103.      will not be converted.  It might have been possible to
  104.      do a partial conversion of your settings to the new
  105.      format, but there are so many new features and bug
  106.      fixes in 1.4 that the conversion would have been
  107.      inaccurate at best.  The decision was made that it
  108.      would be easier for the user to re-create your settings
  109.      than to try to figure out what was converted correctly
  110.      and what was not.
  111.      
  112.      WinPrint 1.32 saved all configuration information in
  113.      the WIN.INI file.  WinPrint 1.4 saves all of it's
  114.      configuration information in the WINPRINT.INI file.
  115.      The format of the information has changed, but when
  116.      WinPrint 1.4 is run on a machine for the first time, it
  117.      copies your registration information to the
  118.      WINPRINT.INI file.  Once you run WinPrint 1.4 for the
  119.      first time you can delete all WinPrint related sections
  120.      from your WIN.INI file if you wish.
  121.      
  122.      I have also changed the format of WinPrint registration
  123.      numbers.  WinPrint 1.4 will correctly decode your 1.32
  124.      registration number and convert it to the new format.
  125.      This has been done for several reasons:
  126.      
  127.      1) The old WinPrint registration number was up to 12
  128.      characters long and was too difficult to enter.
  129.      
  130.      2) The new number format allows me to more easily track
  131.      what version of WinPrint a user is using.
  132.  
  133. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  134.      Version 1.42 of WinPrint has been extensively tested.
  135.      However there are a few problems that are known and are
  136.      not worth the time it would take to fix at this point:
  137.      
  138.      SOME WINDOWS 3.0 PRINTER DRIVERS ARE BUGGY
  139.           Many of the Dot Matrix printer drivers shipped
  140.      with Windows 3.0 are buggy, and most do not in fact
  141.      conform the the Windows 3.0 printer driver
  142.      specification.  Because of this you will not be able to
  143.      change printer settings from WinPrint with these
  144.      drivers.  See the WINPRINT.HLP file for more
  145.      information on this.
  146.      
  147.      POSTSCRIPT EMULATORS REPORT INCORRECT PAGE SIZE
  148.           Several PostScript addon products and emulators
  149.      incorrectly report page size to Windows.  The result is
  150.      that when WinPrint is set up so all margins are set to
  151.      0.00", some text is printed "off page."  If you
  152.      encounter this problem simply increase all four margins
  153.      until the problem goes away (usually 0.10" works).
  154.      This problem has been noted on the HP LaserJet IIIsi in
  155.      PostScript mode and the PacificPage Postscript
  156.      cartridge for the HP LaserJet II.
  157.      
  158.      DOT MATRIX DRIVERS SELECT FONTS INCORRECTLY
  159.           Some Windows 3.0 dot matrix printer drivers allow
  160.      you to set the resoultion that they print graphics at.
  161.      When these drivers are set at their lowest resolution
  162.      settings they print some fonts too big.  The easy work
  163.      around is to set the driver up to use higher resolution
  164.      or print only with device based fonts (see
  165.      WINPRINT.HLP for more details).

  167. VERSION HISTORY
  168.      Version 1.44 February 5, 1992
  169.      Same as version 1.43 except distributed via standard
  170.      shareware channels such as CompuServe.
  171.      
  172.      Version 1.43 February 4, 1992
  173.      This version is a maintenece release.  It fixes some
  174.      minor cosmetic problems.  This version will be
  175.      distributed with a book called Windows 3.1 Power Tools.
  176.      
  177.      Version 1.41 February 4, 1992
  178.      This version is a maintenence release.  Verion 1.40 had
  179.      a major bug in the command line handling (it was
  180.      essentailly compeletely broken).  Version 1.42 also
  181.      removes the need for SHELL.DLL.
  182.      
  183.      Version 1.40 November 1, 1991
  184.      After over a year and a half, there is finally a new
  185.      release of WinPrint!  This version is completely re-
  186.      vamped and updated for Windows 3.0 and 3.1.  New
  187.      features include multiple column printing, Windows
  188.      help, and drag drop from the Windows 3.1 file manager.

  193. LICENSE INFORMATION
  194.  
  195.      WinPrint is not and has never been public domain
  196.      software, nor is it free software.  WinPrint is a
  197.      commercial application distributed as shareware.
  198.  
  199.      Non-licensed users are granted a limited license
  200.      (registration) to use WinPrint on a 21-day trial basis
  201.      for the purpose of determining whether WinPrint is
  202.      suitable for their needs.  The use of WinPrint, except
  203.      for the initial 21-day trial, requires registration.
  204.      The use of unlicensed (un-registered) copies of
  205.      WinPrint by any person, business, corporation,
  206.      government agency or any other entity is strictly
  207.      prohibited.
  208.  
  209.      A single user license permits a user to use WinPrint
  210.      only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  211.      program on different computers, but may not use the
  212.      program on more than one computer at the same time.
  213.  
  214.      No one may modify or patch the WinPrint executable and
  215.      documentation files in any way, including but not
  216.      limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise
  217.      reverse engineering the program.
  218.  
  219.      A limited license is granted to copy and distribute
  220.      WinPrint only for the trial use of others, subject to
  221.      the above limitations, and also the following:
  222.  
  223.      1)   WinPrint must be copied in unmodified form,
  224.           complete with the file containing this license
  225.           information.
  226.  
  227.      2)   The WinPrint product consists of the following
  228.           files:
  229.           WINPRINT.EXE, TDUTIL.DLL, README.TXT, and
  230.           WINPRINT.HLP.  All of these files must be copied
  231.           in unmodified form.
  232.  
  233.      3)   WinPrint may not be distributed in conjunction
  234.           with any other product with out a specific license
  235.           to do so from Charles E. Kindel, Jr.
  236.  
  237.      4)   No fee, charge, or other compensation may be
  238.           requested or accepted, except as authorized below:
  239.  
  240.           A)   Operators of electronic bulletin board
  241.                systems (sysops) may make WinPrint available
  242.                for downloading only as long as the above
  243.                conditions are met.  An overall or time-
  244.                dependent charge for the use of the bulletin
  245.                board system is permitted as long as there is
  246.                not a specific charge for the download of
  247.                WinPrint.
  248.      
  249.           B)   Vendors may charge a disk duplication and
  250.                handling fee, which may not exceed eight
  251.                dollars.
  252.  
  253. LIMITED WARRANTY
  254.  
  255.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. guarantees your satisfaction
  256.      with this product for a period of 90 days from the date
  257.      of original purchase.  If you are unsatisfied with
  258.      WinPrint within that time period contact Charles E.
  259.      Kindel, Jr. via normal or electronic mail for a full
  260.      refund.
  261.  
  262.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. warrants that the program will
  263.      perform in substantial compliance with the
  264.      documentation supplied with the software product.  If a
  265.      significant defect in the product is found, the
  266.      Purchaser may obtain a refund.  In no event will such a
  267.      refund exceed the purchase price of the product.
  268.  
  269.      EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, CHARLES E. KINDEL, JR.
  270.      DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,
  271.      INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
  272.      MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE,
  273.      WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE
  274.      DEFECTIVE, THE PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE

  285.      Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  286.      your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to
  287.      its contents.

  289. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS

  291.      Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is
  292.      subject to restrictions as set forth in subdivision
  293.      (b)(3)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer
  294.      Software clause at 252.227-7013.
